What mountain webcams show

Mountain webcams show peaks, ridges, valleys and high passes in real time. Many stand at huts, cable car stations, observatories and weather stations, which is why they often look out over terrain that is hard to reach on foot.

For anyone heading into the hills, the picture answers questions a forecast cannot: whether the summit is in cloud, how far the snowline has moved, whether a pass road is clear. Cloud behaves differently up high. A valley can sit in fog while the peaks above it are in full sun — an inversion that is spectacular on camera and invisible from below.

Conditions change fast. Mornings are usually the clearest, with cloud building through the afternoon, especially in summer when thunderstorms form over the ridges. In winter snow can bury a lens or ice it over for days. At night most views are dark, though on clear nights some cameras catch the stars above the summit and the lights of villages below.
