What lake webcams show

Lake webcams look over still water and the shores around it: beaches and jetties, villages, forests and often mountains rising behind. On a calm morning the lake turns into a mirror and the whole picture goes still.

The surface of the water is the most reliable weather indicator. Glassy water means no wind, ripples and darker patches show gusts moving across, and whitecaps on a large lake mean conditions small boats should avoid. Sailors, windsurfers and paddlers check these cameras before heading out; anglers look for the calm hours at dawn.

Lakes change with the seasons more than the sea does. Summer brings swimmers, pleasure boats and scheduled ferries, autumn morning mist over the water, and in cold regions winter turns the lake white with ice, sometimes busy with skaters and ice anglers. The spring thaw can be followed day by day. At night only the shore lights remain, reflected in the dark water.
