What fishing webcams show

Fishing webcams look over places where people fish: piers and jetties, riverbanks, lakes, surf beaches and fishing harbours. Some are set up by bait shops, piers and angling clubs; others simply happen to overlook a favourite spot.

For anglers, the camera is a quick check of conditions: the colour and height of the water, wind on the surface, the state of the tide and how many people are already on the pier. Fishing harbours show the other side of the trade — boats heading out before dawn, coming back with the catch, gulls following them in and the fish being landed on the quay.

Timing matters in fishing, and the camera shows it. Dawn and dusk are traditionally the most productive hours, and that is when piers are busiest. Seasonal runs of fish bring crowds of anglers to certain spots, while storms and floods empty them. In cold regions, frozen lakes fill with ice-fishing shelters in winter.
