Weather and time
Mount Fuji rises beyond the southern end of Lake Ashi in this view from the observation deck on Taikanzan, high above Hakone. The paved deck with lamp posts and a staircase fills the foreground, and forested slopes fall away toward the water.
Taikanzan is a summit of about 1,015 metres on the border of Hakone and Yugawara, at the top of the Hakone Turnpike toll road from Odawara. Lake Ashi lies 723 metres above sea level along the southwestern wall of the Hakone caldera, and sightseeing boats styled as pirate ships cross it. Mount Fuji stands about 35 kilometres to the northwest.
The fixed camera looks down on the lake from more than 250 metres above it, with lakeside buildings of the southern shore at the left edge. On busy days cars and motorcycles park on the deck, and on overcast days only the lake and nearer slopes stay visible.
