Weather and time

This camera looks across the wide gravel forecourt of Seiryo-ji Temple in Kyoto's Saga district towards its great main hall. A paved stone path crosses the courtyard between pine trees, with wooded mountains rising behind the roof and a wooden notice board in the foreground.

Seiryo-ji is a Jodo-shu temple founded in the early 11th century and widely known as Saga Shaka-do. Its principal image, a wooden standing Shaka Buddha, is a National Treasure shown only on certain days. The grounds also hold the tomb of Minamoto no Toru, a Heian courtier often named as a model for the hero of The Tale of Genji.

The fixed view faces the hall from near the entrance, so visitors walking between the gate and the hall are easy to follow. In the morning a broad shadow covers the right side of the courtyard; by early afternoon it has moved to the left.
