Weather and time
This view looks across Kiyomizu-zaka, the shop-lined lane that climbs through Higashiyama toward Kiyomizu-dera Temple in Kyoto. A two-storey shop with a tiled canopy, a paper lantern and vertical signboards faces a paved open space where visitors walk past in both directions.
Kiyomizu-zaka runs through the Higashiyama district and leads up to Kiyomizu-dera, one of the best-known temples in the city. The street is lined with small shops, tea houses and souvenir stalls, and most people walk it on foot.
The camera is fixed and shows the street at close range: the same storefront stays in the middle of the picture from morning to afternoon, while the number of people changes. Unlike the wide Higashioji-dori junction at the foot of Gojo-zaka, this frame is filled with shopfronts, signs and walkers rather than roads and buses.
