Weather and time
This camera looks along a narrow lane of tile-roofed wooden houses and small shops on the approach to Ginkaku-ji in Sakyo Ward, Kyoto. Pine trees and shop awnings frame the street, and walkers pass along it throughout the day.
Ginkaku-ji, officially Jisho-ji, is a Zen temple at the foot of the Higashiyama hills that began in 1482 as a retreat for the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa. It belongs to the UNESCO site Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto. The Philosopher's Path starts close to the temple and heads south along a canal. The temple itself is not in this frame.
The camera is fixed above the lane, so the same houses, red and pink awnings, a small stall with purple banners and pine trees stay in view, with stone steps closing the far end. School groups, couples and small parties pass through, and a van occasionally squeezes by.
