Weather and time

This view looks across the gravel front courtyard of Heian Jingu Shrine in Okazaki, Kyoto, toward vermilion halls with green tiled roofs. Stone steps lead up at the right, and visitors cross the open ground between the buildings.

Heian Jingu was founded in 1895 to mark the 1,100th anniversary of Kyoto as the capital, and it is dedicated to Emperors Kanmu and Komei. Its main buildings are reduced-scale replicas of the original Heian-period Imperial Palace. The shrine stands in the Okazaki area, close to museums and a large torii gate.

The fixed camera looks down at the courtyard from a raised point, so the lower half of the picture is bare gravel and the buildings stand along the upper edge. Small groups of visitors walk between the steps and the covered pavilion at the left.
