Weather and time

This view looks down on the vermilion Takao Bridge in northwestern Kyoto, where the approach to Jingo-ji Temple crosses the Kiyotaki River. Maple trees crowd the slope beyond the red railings, and walkers cross the paved deck on their way to and from the temple.

Jingo-ji is a Shingon Buddhist temple on Mount Takao in Ukyo Ward, whose history goes back to the early Heian period. Its halls stand high above the valley, and visitors reach them by a long stone stairway that starts near this bridge. The Takao area is one of the best-known places in Kyoto for autumn maples.

The fixed camera frames the bridge diagonally from a raised point, with the far end of the deck on the left and an ornamental railing post at the lower right. Overhanging branches fill the top of the picture, so the scene is almost entirely bridge, path and forest.
