Weather and time

This camera frames the summit area of Sakurajima from Tarumizu, showing the volcano's upper ridges and crater zone at close range. Eroded gullies cut across the grey slopes, and plumes of steam rising from behind the summit are visible in the frame.

Sakurajima is a stratovolcano in Kagoshima Bay, and most of its recent activity has come from Minamidake, the southern summit, and the nearby Showa crater on its eastern flank. Access to the upper slopes is restricted, so the active vents are usually watched from a distance. Tarumizu lies on the Osumi Peninsula, southeast of the volcano.

This is the tightest framing among the views of Sakurajima from the Tarumizu side: the summit ridge fills most of the frame, with no sea or town in sight. It shows changes at the craters, such as new plumes or fresh ash, in more detail than the wider views.
