Weather and time
This camera looks across the water from Kaigata Fishing Port in Tarumizu to the steep southeastern face of Sakurajima volcano. Small fishing boats and rows of floats dot the calm water in the foreground, while bare ash-grey upper slopes rise above a green lower belt.
Kaigata sits on the Osumi Peninsula side of Kagoshima Bay, close to the spot where lava from the 1914 Taisho eruption joined Sakurajima to the mainland. The volcano is one of the most active in Japan, and its summit vents release steam and ash plumes frequently.
Because the port lies so close to the volcano, this view fills the frame with the mountain's profile rather than showing it as a distant peak. On clear days the summit ridge and any rising plume stand out sharply against the sky, and the boats below give a sense of scale.
