Weather and time
The camera looks at Shinmoedake, an active volcano in the Kirishima mountains, from Kirishima City on the Kagoshima side of the range. Its broad, flat-topped cone rises above dark forested foothills, and wisps of white steam can be seen near the crater rim.
Shinmoedake belongs to the Kirishima volcano group on the border of Kagoshima and Miyazaki prefectures, inside Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park. It erupted in 2011, 2017 and 2018, and a new eruptive phase began in June 2025. Abroad it is known as the site of the villains' rocket base in the 1967 James Bond film You Only Live Twice.
The fixed view keeps the whole cone in frame, from the gentle left-hand slope to the steeper right flank. On cloudy days the peak can vanish behind low cloud, while in clearer light the bare grey upper slopes stand out above the forest.
