Weather and time

Ushibuka Haiya Bridge curves over the harbour of Ushibuka in Amakusa, Kumamoto Prefecture, in a high view from the waterfront. The road runs straight toward the bridge, with moored fishing boats on the left and town blocks on the right.

The bridge is 883 metres long and was completed in 1997, which makes it the longest bridge in Kumamoto Prefecture. It was designed with the Renzo Piano Building Workshop and carries a port road over the fishing harbour of Ushibuka at the southern tip of Shimoshima, the largest of the Amakusa Islands. Its name comes from the Haiya, a folk song of the Ushibuka area.

The camera looks along the approach road, so the deck bends away to the right above the water while green hills close the bay behind it. A parking lot and a grassy plaza lie beside the road, and small boats line the quay at the lower left.
