What city webcams show

City webcams look over streets, rooftops and skylines in real time. Some are mounted high on towers and hotels for a panorama of the whole centre, others sit at street level and show pedestrians, cafés and trams up close.

A city camera works like a window into another time zone. In the morning the view fills with commuters and delivery vans, at midday with tourists, and in the evening with lit windows and traffic lights. The weather is easy to read from a skyline: haze, low cloud wrapped around the towers, wet streets reflecting the lights. Parades, public events and street repairs show up the moment they happen.

The most flattering light for a panorama is usually the hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset. At night many city cameras stay surprisingly clear thanks to street lighting, while views facing water or parks go dark. The seasons show as well, from bare trees and snow on the roofs to festive lights in December.
