The white marble of the Altare della Patria stands over Piazza Venezia in the historic centre of Rome. Umbrella pines fill the lower part of the frame, with the Capitoline Hill and its stairways to the right.
The monument was built between 1885 and 1925 for Victor Emmanuel II, the first king of a united Italy, and it holds the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Its bronze quadrigas sit at the two ends of the colonnade, outlined against the sky in this view.
Piazza Venezia is the junction where several main streets of central Rome meet, at the foot of the Capitoline. Trajan Forum, the Palazzo Venezia and the road to the Colosseum all begin within a couple of hundred metres of the square. Floodlighting keeps the monument in the camera picture after dark.
