What monument webcams show

Monument webcams show statues, memorials, triumphal arches, castles and other historic structures, usually together with the square or park around them. For many towns a monument is the symbol of the place, and the camera keeps it in view around the clock.

Monuments are where public memory gathers. Wreaths are laid on anniversaries, ceremonies and parades pass by, visitors stop for photographs, and on ordinary days the steps of a memorial become a meeting point. The camera shows all of this as it happens, along with restoration work, scaffolding and seasonal decorations that come and go.

Lighting changes these structures more than most. Many monuments are floodlit after dark, and some are lit in special colours on national days or in solidarity with events elsewhere. Snow on a statue's shoulders or fog around a castle tower gives a familiar view a completely new look.
