Monument Square, ME Live Cam

Monument Square is the civic space in the middle of Portland, on the Atlantic coast of the state of Maine. The camera looks across the paving at the memorial and the buildings.

The monument went up in 1891 for the soldiers and sailors of the civil war, on the site of the old city hall. The figure on top is Victory, and locals have called her Our Lady of Victories for over a century.

The city around it is almost entirely post-1866. A fire that started on the fourth of July that year burned out the commercial centre and left ten thousand people homeless, the worst urban fire in the United States before Chicago.
