What Christmas webcams show
Christmas webcams show towns and cities in their festive season: Christmas markets, decorated squares, giant trees, illuminated streets and church fronts. The cameras watch these places all year round; in the weeks before Christmas the view turns festive.
The season follows a familiar sequence. Markets open in late November or early December, the lights are switched on at a public ceremony, and stalls with mulled wine, sweets and handicrafts fill the squares. Evenings are the time to watch: the lights are on, the crowds are thickest and, with luck, snow is falling. On Christmas Eve itself many places empty out as people head home or to church, which makes for a quiet, glowing picture.
The festive look depends on the hemisphere: in the north it comes with frost and early darkness, in the south with summer heat and beaches. Christmas Eve brings midnight services, carols on cathedral squares and Nativity scenes, and after Epiphany the decorations come down again.
