Higgins Beach, Maine Live Cam

Higgins Beach faces the open Atlantic at Scarborough, Maine, a short crescent of sand between the Spurwink River and a rocky point. The camera sits above the sand and takes in the whole arc at once.

The ribs of the Howard W. Middleton break the surface near the middle of the beach at low tide. The four-masted schooner was driven ashore in 1897, and enough of the hull survives in the sand that it reappears and disappears as storms shift the beach.

This is one of the few places in Maine with a rideable break, and surfers are in the water through the year in wetsuits. Summer parking is tightly restricted, which keeps the crowd smaller than the sand would suggest.
