What zoo webcams show

Zoo webcams stream from enclosures, aviaries and animal houses, so animals can be watched in real time between visits. Some cameras stay on a single enclosure, others switch between several or look at a feeding area.

Animals keep their own schedule. Many are most active in the early morning and around feeding time, while big cats and bears can sleep for hours on end. An empty-looking enclosure usually means the animals are indoors or out of frame, and the view is worth checking again later. For a zoo on another continent, the time difference decides whether it is morning or night there.

The picture also changes with the seasons. In winter tropical species may stay in heated houses for weeks, while spring and early summer are the time of births and young animals. At night most zoo cameras show a dark enclosure, and some switch to infrared.
