Weather and time
This camera faces across a pool in the Asian elephant habitat at Honolulu Zoo, with the ridge of Diamond Head rising above the trees. Rock walls frame the water, and beyond it a dirt yard holds shade umbrellas, a black ribbed tube and a cave-like recess in the back wall.
The zoo occupies a corner of Kapiolani Park at the eastern end of Waikiki, and the elephant habitat lies along its eastern edge. It opened in 2011 with two pools deep enough for the elephants to submerge completely when they bathe. The zoo keeps two female Asian elephants, Mari and Vaigai, born in 1975 and 1985.
The camera sits under a roof edge on a rocky bank planted with tall grass, so the umbrellas and trees are often mirrored in the still water. The elephants appear on the far side of the pool, walking along the back wall or standing near the shrubs on the right.
