Weather and time
A fixed camera looks over the black rhinoceros yard in the African Savanna section of Honolulu Zoo, from behind a bamboo fence. A long lattice-walled shelter with a metal roof lines the left side, while logs, boulders and a dark mud wallow lie on the bare earth.
The zoo stands at the eastern end of Waikiki, inside Kapiolani Park and close to Diamond Head. Its rhinos are Eastern black rhinoceroses, a critically endangered subspecies that is smaller than the white rhino and has a pointed upper lip. A female named Aria arrived from San Diego Zoo Safari Park in 2022, and the zoo recorded its first rhino birth in April 2023.
A row of wooden posts strung with chains crosses the back of the yard, with reddish rock mounds beyond it, and a second rhino is often in view there. A rhino that comes to the near side of the yard fills much of the frame.
