Weather and time
This camera watches the waterhole at the Safarihoek viewing hide in Etosha Heights Private Reserve, south-west of Etosha National Park. A dead tree rises from a grassy islet in the water, with red stony ground and low bush on the far bank.
Etosha Heights is a private reserve of about 60,000 hectares that shares a 65-kilometre boundary with the national park. Safarihoek lodge stands on a hill above this small waterhole, while the camera films from a hide close to the water. Black rhino are among the reserve’s protected species, and in the dry months animals gather at the remaining water.
The camera often zooms in on single visitors: springbok along the shore, a black-backed jackal drinking and white wading birds in the shallows. Wider shots show the whole pool with the dead tree on its islet, the line of scrub beyond and open sky above.
