Honolulu is the capital and largest city of Hawaii, on the south shore of the island of Oahu. Its urban area is home to about 350,000 people, while the City and County of Honolulu takes in the whole island and roughly a million residents. The city became the capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii in 1845, and Iolani Palace, completed in 1882 for King Kalakaua, is the only royal palace in the United States. Waikiki and its beach lie east of downtown toward Diamond Head, and Pearl Harbor lies to the west.
