Honolulu Zoo Penguin, HI Live Cam

African penguins stand about the sand and the shallow pool of their enclosure at Honolulu Zoo, on the island of Oahu in Hawaii. Rock walls and a viewing window close the exhibit on the left.

The species breeds on the coast of South Africa and Namibia, where the wild population has collapsed over the past century and is now listed as endangered. Zoo colonies like this one are part of a coordinated breeding programme.

The zoo covers about forty acres at the edge of Kapiolani Park, between Waikiki and Diamond Head. The live stream shows the birds at their most active around feeding times, and asleep in the shade for much of the afternoon.
