Weather and time
An elevated view from the Rear Range Lighthouse in Newburyport, Massachusetts, looks past the front range light toward the river mouth. Boats cross the wide Merrimack River beyond the Coast Guard pier.
The Rear Range Light stands at 61 1/2 Water Street, a brick tower built in 1873 that works with a smaller front light to guide boats up the Merrimack River. The front light is the small white tower with a red cap on the grounds of the Coast Guard station, where patrol boats lie at a pier. Mooring buoys dot the channel, and low shores close the horizon.
This is the widest and highest of the waterfront angles, and the only one with a lighthouse in the frame. The camera stays fixed and faces out across the river toward its mouth, so boats passing through the channel cross the whole scene.
