Chicago Skyline, Illinois Live Cam

Lake Shore Drive runs north from this webcam towards the Chicago skyline, on the shore of Lake Michigan in Illinois. Grant Park spreads out on the left, the harbour and its moorings on the right, and traffic runs down the middle of the frame.

The park and the drive both stand on made ground: this whole strip of shoreline was filled in and laid out as public land, which is why the towers of the Loop stop in a line and give way to grass. The Ferris wheel visible at the far right is on Navy Pier.

Boats fill the harbour from May until the autumn haul-out and the same basin is empty ice for months afterwards. After dark the skyline is lit and the drive shows as two lines of headlights.
