Weather and time

A bald eagle nest seen from directly above at the ND-LEEF research site in St. Patrick's County Park, South Bend, Indiana. The broad bowl of sticks is lined with dry grass, pine sprigs and fallen leaves.

ND-LEEF is the University of Notre Dame's Linked Experimental Ecosystem Facility, a group of engineered ponds, streams and wetlands just south of the Michigan state line. In 2015 a pair of bald eagles took over an old red-tailed hawk nest here, one of the first two successful eagle nests on record in St. Joseph County. Fish make up most of the prey the adults bring to the nest.

Mounted right above the six-foot-wide nest, the camera takes in the whole cup at once. Eggs usually appear in late February and hatch in early April, and the eaglets fledge around mid-June. Outside the season the nest can stand empty for long stretches.
