White Stork Nest, Hungen Live Cam

A broad white stork nest on a raised platform at the northern edge of Hungen, a small town in central Hesse, fills the foreground. Behind it lie a gravel yard with parked trailers, a wide ploughed field, green farmland and a wooded horizon.

Hungen lies in the southeast of the Gießen district, where the Wetterau meets the foothills of the Vogelsberg. Its castle stands on a low hill above the Horloff river. The town is known as the Schäferstadt, the shepherds’ town, after the festival it holds every two years.

The wide-angle lens sits just above the rim, giving a close view of the breeding pair as they add sticks, sit on the eggs and feed their chicks in spring and summer. White storks winter far to the south, so from late summer until spring the nest usually stands empty.
