Weather and time
This camera sits inside an eagle owl nest box about 60 metres up the south tower of St Elizabeth's Church in Marburg, Hesse. The frame takes in the dark wooden walls of the box and its gravel floor, with the weathered sandstone of the tower on the right.
Conservation volunteers fitted the box in 2011 behind an open window above the tower's highest balustrade, originally for peregrine falcons. Eagle owls first raised young here in 2013 and have returned to breed in later years. The Gothic church was begun in 1235 over the grave of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, and its towers, about 80 metres tall, were finished around 1300.
The fixed camera looks across the nesting floor toward the open side, so a resting owl fills much of the picture. Between broods the box can stand empty, and Marburg rooftops and a wooded hillside show beyond the stonework.
