Weather and time
Steel truss railroad bridges stand beyond the Broadway Street crossing in Blue Island, Illinois, at the far end of a wide spread of tracks. A signal gantry with crossbucks marks the road crossing at the right.
Blue Island grew up as a railroad town: the Rock Island began service here in 1852 and opened car shops in 1883. Today several freight lines run side by side through the city, including CSX's Barr and Elsdon Subdivisions and the Indiana Harbor Belt. The tracks in view head north to cross the Calumet-Sag Channel on the rust-colored bridges visible at the left.
The camera looks over the road in the foreground, the crossing signals, gray equipment cabinets beside the rails and the tree line beyond. A church steeple shows above the treetops at the right edge. The framing stays fixed on this crossing and the bridges behind it.
