Screech Owl Nest Box 8, Murrysville Live Cam

Screech Owl Nest Box 8 in Murrysville, Pennsylvania, looks into a wooden owl box with a large round entrance hole and a bed of wood shavings. The hole sits in the upper left of the frame, and the shavings form a rounded mound on the right.

The box is part of an eastern screech owl research project that began in 2011 on wooded private land in Murrysville, Westmoreland County, east of Pittsburgh. Nine boxes in these woods carry cameras, and the project follows how the owls use them for daytime roosting in winter and for nesting in spring. The woodland is private, and its exact location is not public.

Unlike the small songbird boxes, this one is built from rough boards, and curved saw marks and wood grain stand out on the walls around the opening. The wide lens takes in the entrance, the corner below it and the mound of shavings on the floor.
