Weather and time
This fixed camera looks west from the Station Inn in Cresson, Pennsylvania, across the Norfolk Southern Pittsburgh Line. Freight trains pass in front of the lens, with a gravel parking lot and a grassy embankment in the foreground.
Cresson sits on the crest of the Allegheny Mountains in Cambria County, at about 2,057 feet. The Allegheny Portage Railroad crossed these mountains in 1834, and the Pennsylvania Railroad followed in 1854. Today the line carries Norfolk Southern freight, with helper locomotives added to heavy trains for the climb, and Amtrak's Pennsylvanian also passes through.
The main track runs behind a low grassy bank, so a long freight takes minutes to cross the frame. Utility poles and wires cut across the view, a tall spruce stands near the center, and wooded hillsides rise behind the tracks.
