Weather and time
Dean's Dam lies in the Olifants West reserve, part of the Greater Kruger area in Limpopo, South Africa, below this view. The waterhole and its dry approaches lie below the lens, with open bush stretching to the horizon on both sides.
The reserve shares an unfenced boundary with the Kruger National Park, so animals move through freely, and the dam is one of the points they come to for water. Elephant, zebra, antelope and buffalo use it, mostly in the hours around dawn and dusk.
Through the dry winter months the surrounding bush thins out and the traffic to water increases; after the summer rains the animals disperse and the frame can stay empty for hours. The camera pans across the pan and the treeline, and the camp that runs it captions the picture.
