Weather and time
Orphaned rhinos rest and graze in a sandy, fenced boma at the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre in Limpopo, South Africa. Shade trees, a shallow pool and a tall wooden pole fence ring the open yard.
The centre lies on the R40 road south of the town of Hoedspruit, west of Kruger National Park. It began in 1990 as a cheetah breeding project and now also cares for rhinos orphaned by poaching. Calm sheep are kept with the young rhinos as companions and often lie among them.
The main view looks across the yard, with a round patch of dried mud in the foreground. Late in the afternoon the rhinos gather near the camera to eat hay or doze side by side, while around midday the yard is often empty. At times the camera zooms in on the animals at the hay, and after dark the picture turns black and white.
