Katahdin is the highest mountain in Maine at 5,269 feet (1,606 m) and the centerpiece of Baxter State Park in Piscataquis County. It is the northern end of the Appalachian Trail and has been a National Natural Landmark since 1967. The long, flat summit ridge with steep gullies stands out above the forest on the far shore.
