Noepoli is a small hill town in the province of Potenza, in southern Basilicata, close to the Pollino National Park. The stone memorial on the square is the town's war memorial, the Monumento ai Caduti. The square is laid with stone slabs in grey and red patterns.

The view is fixed and faces roughly south-east over the wall, with open farmland and wooded hills in the background. In the morning long shadows of the cars and lamp post stretch across the paving, and later in the day the square is evenly lit.
