Basilicata, Italy
Basilicata is a region of southern Italy between the Tyrrhenian and Ionian seas, with Potenza as its capital and just over 520,000 residents; it is also known by its ancient name, Lucania. It is the most mountainous region of the Italian south, and the Pollino National Park is the largest national park in Italy. The cave dwellings of the Sassi of Matera have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993, and Matera was European Capital of Culture in 2019. Maratea lies on the Tyrrhenian coast, and the ruins of the ancient Greek city of Metapontum on the Ionian coast.
