Geese, ducks and chickens share a yard and a pond at a smallholding near Aberdeen, in the north-east of Maryland. The camera pans between the pen and the water.

Goslings fix on the first moving thing they see after hatching and follow it about. The behaviour was worked out with greylags in the 1930s, and it is why hand-reared birds shadow people around a yard like this one.

The farm sells birds and eggs in season. Aberdeen itself is better known for the army proving ground that has been testing ordnance on the flats along Chesapeake Bay since 1917, and which takes up most of the peninsula east of the town.
