Weather and time

A backyard feeding station near Lancaster, Pennsylvania, is built around a weathered cedar trunk hung with feeders of many kinds. Green wooden hopper feeders, a suet cage, copper-capped tube feeders and open seed trays fill the frame against a lawn and leafy shrubs.

Lancaster is the seat of Lancaster County in south-central Pennsylvania, a region of farmland and small towns. Gardens here draw woodpeckers, nuthatches, cardinals, finches and bluebirds. In the cold months juncos and sparrows from the north join them.

The camera stays fixed on the cedar post, a fallen tree set upright whose bare branches hold feeders at different heights. Tube feeders hang on the right, a white birdhouse-style feeder sits on the left, and two metal trays fill the foreground. A wire-fenced pen and a line of trees close off the view.
