This is a set of four views of Washington at once, taken from the tower cameras of a local television station. The Washington Monument and the Capitol dome appear in most of them.

The skyline is flat by law. A federal act of 1910 limits building height to the width of the street in front plus twenty feet, which is why nothing competes with the dome and the obelisk and why the offices spread sideways instead.

The Monument is 169 metres of marble and was built in two goes: the money ran out in 1854 and work stopped for over twenty years, which is why the stone changes colour about a third of the way up.
