Weather and time

This camera looks straight down into a bald eagle nest in a sycamore on the National Conservation Training Center campus near Shepherdstown. The oval bowl of woven sticks with its grass lining sits in a fork of pale, mottled limbs, with the ground far below.

The camera hangs about 10 feet above the nest and some 85 feet above the ground. The nest itself is new: a windstorm in April 2025 toppled the pair's old nest from the top of the same tree, and the eagles rebuilt about 15 feet lower. In 2026 the first eggs in the new nest were laid on February 18 and 21. Bald eagles add sticks and dry grass through autumn and winter before the next laying season.

From this height the entire nest cup is in view, so eggs, chicks and feeding can be followed without the rim in the way. A second camera housing is strapped to a limb on the right.
