West Virginia is a mountainous state in the eastern United States, the only one lying entirely within Appalachia, with about 1.8 million residents and Charleston as its capital. It split from Virginia during the American Civil War, after Virginia had left the Union, and became a separate state in 1863. Known as the Mountain State, it is crossed by the ridges of the Allegheny Mountains, and the New River Gorge in the south became a national park in 2020. Coal mining and logging shaped its economy for more than a century.
