Weather and time
This camera overlooks Shimoda Harbor on the southern Izu Peninsula, a sheltered bay ringed by wooded hills. A Japan Coast Guard patrol vessel is often moored at the quay in the foreground, with a small rock islet and a narrow breakwater at the right.
Shimoda is the port where Commodore Perry's Black Ships anchored in 1854, and the harbour still handles sightseeing cruises in a Black Ship style, fishing boats and ferries to the Izu Islands such as Niijima and Kozushima. A large white ferry is sometimes berthed at the quay and sometimes away, so the foreground changes through the day.
The camera looks down from a raised point on the harbour shore, which puts the whole basin in view from the nearby quay to the far shore. On the left a fishing wharf with cranes and a pink hotel stands against the hills, and small boats cross the open water between.
