Weather and time
This camera looks over the square in front of Izukyu-Shimoda Station in Shimoda, on the southern Izu Peninsula. Buses wait in marked bays beside a large yellow canopy, with green mountains rising behind the station roofs.
Izukyu-Shimoda is the terminus of the Izukyu railway line that runs down the east coast of the peninsula, so the square is where arriving visitors change to local buses. The harbour where Commodore Perry's Black Ships called in 1854 lies about a kilometre to the south-east, and the beaches of Shirahama are a few kilometres away.
The view is from an upper level on the south side of the square, looking north across a road junction toward the station building. A row of colourful umbrella-shaped shelters stands at the right, and a small building with a clock tower rises among the shopfronts in the centre.
