Weather and time

This view from a rooftop on Cape Omaezaki shows the white Omaesaki Lighthouse standing beside a wide sweep of the Pacific Ocean. Low white buildings sit at the foot of the tower, and surf breaks along the rocky shore below.

Cape Omaezaki is the southern tip of Omaezaki in Shizuoka Prefecture, between Suruga Bay and the open Enshu-nada. The lighthouse was first lit in 1874 and was built under the British engineer Richard Henry Brunton. Visitors can climb its brick tower to the gallery at the top.

The fixed camera takes in a broad, curved panorama. The tower stands on the right with its lantern and railing clearly visible, and people often stand on the gallery or cross the courtyard below. The left half of the frame is open sea, where white breakers roll in towards the cape.
