Weather and time
This fixed camera looks across a peregrine falcon nest box on a smokestack of the Hibbard Energy Center in West Duluth, Minnesota. Beyond the gravel floor and the wooden edge of the box, the frame takes in Saint Louis Bay and a section of the Bong Bridge.
The plant stands on the bay shore near the bridge. It was built in 1929 as a coal-fired power station and was later converted to burn waste wood. A nest box was fitted high on one of its stacks, the first peregrine chick hatched there in 2008, and more than 20 have hatched since. The Bong Bridge carries US Highway 2 across the bay to Superior, Wisconsin.
Unlike nest cameras that show only the inside of a box, this one also looks out over the water. Falcons usually return in March and chicks hatch in late May; outside the nesting season the box is often empty and the bridge fills the view.
