Weather and time
This camera watches a cluster of bird feeders at the edge of a clearing in the Kettle Moraine State Forest near Whitewater, Wisconsin. A long wooden tray full of seed fills the foreground, with tube, hopper and suet feeders hanging from posts and poles behind it.
The forest's Southern Unit stretches about 30 miles from Dousman almost to Whitewater, across Walworth, Jefferson and Waukesha counties. Its wooded ridges, kettle lakes and marshes were left by the last glacier, and the Ice Age National Scenic Trail runs through it. Migrating songbirds pass through in spring and fall.
Behind the feeders lie a grassy yard, a brushy field and deciduous trees that turn yellow and orange in autumn. Black-capped chickadees and American goldfinches cling to the seed tubes, while larger birds land on the open tray.
