Weather and time
The view stretches south along Woodcleft Canal in Freeport, on Long Island's South Shore, with fishing and charter boats moored on both banks. Woodcleft Avenue runs behind the dockside buildings on the right, and houses with boat slips line the opposite shore.
Freeport, a village in Nassau County, was named in 1853 after a nickname used by colonial-era ship captains, who could land cargo there free of customs duties. Around 1897 developer John J. Randall's firm dredged the canal to turn marshland into lots for summer homes. Its west bank is now the Nautical Mile, with seafood restaurants, bars and fish markets.
From the northern end of the canal, the camera looks down the waterway to open water in the distance. A large white excursion boat lies broadside in the right foreground. At midday the camera faces the sun, and light glitters on the water.
