St Clair Beach in Dunedin, with the Esplanade lights along the sea wall and the surf breaking in lines beyond. The beach faces south into the open Pacific.

St Clair picks up swell most of the year, which makes it the city's surf beach — there are usually boards in the water whatever the season, and the pole line of the old shark net still stands out in the breakers. The heated saltwater pool sits at the far end of the Esplanade, and the cafés along the wall look straight out at the waves.

The camera runs through the night on low light, so the sea is visible mainly as the pale lines of breaking water under the street lamps.
